Many people want to know how long the treatment will last, but no therapist can really tell you that because the road to recovery is different for each individual. It is important to keep in mind that eating disorders do not simply “go away.” They are serious and complex illnesses that require the attention of trained and specialized professionals. The path to recovery will not be perfect, but it is definitely possible.
When seeking help, keep in mind that even the most renowned therapist in the world may not be the best therapist for you, just as no one outfit is the perfect fit for everyone. If you feel that the first—or second or even third—person you see does not feel like the right fit, don’t be afraid to make a change. If it isn’t working, you have no obligation to stay. And don’t think that just because the first person you see does not work out, no therapy is going to work.
