Helpline Acquisition & Expanded Services

The National Alliance for Eating Disorders has seen a 75% increase in calls to our helpline, compared to this time last year.

The demand for our services has never been greater. We are working hard to ensure that individuals receive the necessary care and support they deserve, so that no one has to suffer alone.

We have invested in our helpline by expanding services and acquiring the former National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA)’s helpline number (800-931-2237) when it was closed this past May, which will automatically re-direct to The Alliance’s helpline at 866-662-1235.

The Alliance’s helpline is run by licensed, eating disorder-specialized therapists who are here to help. We can provide support and referrals to all levels of eating disorder treatment.

In addition, over the past year, The Alliance has become the primary resource for help for many of the social media platforms, including Meta (Facebook, Instagram, and Threads), TikTok, and Snapchat.

Not only have we seen as increase in calls, we have seen a complete shift in “who” is calling. At the beginning of the year, 51% of callers were loved ones of those experiencing eating disorders, and now, 48% are from individuals seeking help for themselves. Additionally, 32% of individuals seeking help via our helpline are under the age of 18, and 12% are over the age of 50.

As a result of the increased need, we expanded our helpline hours earlier this year and hired more licensed therapists to support the growing number of calls. We plan to continue to expand our helpline hours in the upcoming months.
