Finding Support and Strength During the Holiday Season
The holidays—from Halloween through Thanksgiving and the December celebrations—can be one of the most challenging times for individuals and families navigating eating disorders. While many focus on celebrations, those struggling may face heightened stress around food-centered entertainment, meals, disrupted routines, and social pressures. It can be common to wonder, “Is this really the right time for treatment?”

As someone who struggled with an eating disorder as a teenager and young adult, and as a clinician working with people with eating disorders for three decades now, I find myself thinking, “Yes! Now is the right time”, because often there never is “the right time” given all of life’s conflicting responsibilities.
From my perspective as a leader of The Emily Program, I know that many individuals have found beginning treatment during the holidays to be incredibly powerful. Rather than postponing getting help until after the stressful and overwhelming holiday fray is done, individuals receive structured support exactly when triggers are most acute. With guidance and multidisciplinary care, individuals learn to navigate their relationship with food, manage food-centered events, handle anxiety, and address social pressures in real time, turning challenging moments into opportunities for growth and resilience. Their loved ones learn ways to support, encourage, and be present in new ways to further promote recovery.
Eating disorders often create invisible barriers to meaningful connection. Someone with an eating disorder may physically be present at family gatherings but struggle to engage due to preoccupation with food, anxiety, or body image. Treatment can turn the holidays into a time of healing rather than an ongoing struggle.

So, in answer to the question “Is this really the right time for treatment?”, starting treatment during the holiday season can ultimately be an investment in the future and a step toward a lifetime of meaningful, lower-stress holidays, authentic connections, and sustainable recovery.
